FRIENDS OF MUNICIPAL SCHEDULES NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP
A neighborhood
clean-up day spearheaded by the Friends of the Municipal Auditorium
will take place Saturday, May 22, from 8 a.m. to noon to get the
area prepared for the scheduled opening of the Stage of Stars
museum exhibit and tours beginning in June.
Two hundred
volunteers are expected to pick up litter, paint, weed, edge and
mow the grass in the general area around the Municipal, 705 Elvis
Presley Ave., and Oakland Cemetery. The area from Texas to Douglas
to Sprague to Austin/Christian to Texas, about a quarter square
mile, will be covered. The group hopes to begin a neighborhood
association along with property owners.
Registration
begins at 7:30 a.m. The first 100 volunteers to register that
morning receive a free T-shirt.
During the
duration of the cleanup, Interventions on Texas Avenue, from an
advanced architectural design studio at the University of Texas
in Austin, will be exhibited in the lobby. It highlights seven
bold proposals for an abandoned building in downtown Shreveport.
The result of a semester-long study, this exhibit explores urban
and programming initiatives and proposes very intriguing and unique
possibilities for the neglected and under-realized Texas Avenue
Corridor adjacent to the Municipal Auditorium.
This effort
is co-sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority and David
Nelson Architect and UT’s Professor Pankaj Gupta.
Expected
to participate in the clean-up are the American Legion, Girl Scouts,
Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal, RSVP, Barksdale Air Force
Base, ShrevCORPS and area churches. Other groups and individuals
are welcome.
Students
under 16 may not operate the electrical equipment, but are welcome
to pick up and bag trash. Gloves and Litter Getters will be provided.
Refreshments will be provided. Parking is available in the lot
north of the auditorium.
The Municipal
is the former home of the Louisiana Hayride and where Elvis Presley
made his professional radio debut 50 years ago in October.
The American
Legion was instrumental in getting the building in Shreveport
75 years ago. The Girls Scouts once had their offices there.

or for more information, call Johnny Wessler at 393-3274.
Rain date
is May 29.
